This week

We'll be finishing up by watching IN THE LOOP this week. I will collect final essays tomorrow. There have been some email problems this past week but everything seems to be coming through now. I will be online later tonight, until about midnight, if anyone wants any last minute help...

  1. I really loved the style of comedic approach used in In the Loop. It was so subtle at times but the use of one liners, in particular, were so constant that it felt very second nature. In the Loop was also especially successful in its approach to satire. I feel this way because, like the one liners, satire was so subtle that it almost felt more like a documentary of political affairs than a comedy about it (the stark exception of this being Malcolm whose potty mouth, I'm assuming, would not be very happily received at international war conventions.

  2. Also, I tried to post a new blog about Atonement but was not able to do so. If anyone else knows how to do this and can repost my blog below to start a new discussion about the film, that would be great:

There were several times throughout Atonement where I found myself comparing the film to modern American films that are about the world war eras (i.e. a film like Saving Private Ryan). However, it is clear that this film is not so much about the war but about the class changes that were happening as told through the story of a family and a couples demise. With this in mind, how do you feel about a comparison like this? Can you think of other movies made in a similar nature, where they are talking about social and class changes?

  3. In the loop made it very clear how ridiculous the business of governing and control can be in our modern society, how thin the line is image and who has control over what is stated by those in power and how corrupt everything is

  4. about ATONEMENT
I just watched this again, there is a lot going on here with flashbacks narative and tying in the past with bits of heritage scenery, upper class and lower class, WW2 the end of an era in british aristocracy, classes begin to fade and new politics. The sound is great as well, the typewritter etc very well knit
